“Satisfied with Jesus”

Isaiah 55: “You there! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; And you who have no money come, buy and eat. Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. 2 Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and delight yourself in abundance. 3 Incline your ear and come to Me. Listen, that you may live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, according to the faithful mercies shown to David.

I love the way this passage begins. “You there!” The King James Version translates it, Ho! As we make our way through this Holy Week there is a sense that the cross is one big ‘Hey You,’ to all of us.  The cross calls us to wake up from the numbing slumber of the sour wine.  Behold… take notice… THIS MEANS YOU! Tonight, we begin by understanding God loves us, not so much as a group, but as individuals.  A. W. Tozer once wrote, “Jesus Christ came not to condemn you but to save you, knowing your name, knowing all about you, knowing your weight right now, knowing your age, knowing what you do, knowing where you live, knowing what you ate for supper and what you will eat for breakfast, where you will sleep tonight, how much your clothing costs, who your parents were. He knows you individually as though there were not another person in the entire world. He died for you as certainly as if you had been the only lost one. He knows the worst about you and is the One who loves you the most.”

Then why fight Him? If you are reading this tonight and you do not have a personal relationship with Jesus by faith through grace, what are waiting for? He is the only being in the cosmos who has your best interest at heart. There is no comparison between life with Jesus and life without Him. If you don’t know that it is only because you don’t know Him.  Come and see! You are thirsty, like all of us are.  Come and be satisfied in Him without cost. He has already paid all you could ever owe.  He longs to forgive you of your sin, to come into your heart and save you. It is as easy as A-B-C…Admit you are sinner, Believe in your heart that Jesus is God’s Son, Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord. You can do it right now, where you are. The Spirit of God is listening and always answers that prayer.

But even if you are in relationship with Jesus, maybe you have been for years, the question remains – why fight Him? Are you holding on to some part of yourself, some dark corner in your heart where you are still fighting to sit on a makeshift throne?  Why not surrender all? You of all people know how greatly and how deeply you are loved by Jesus.  You of all people know the depths to which you have been forgiven by Jesus. You of all people should come to the cross and expect to find mercy and forgiveness. There is rest for your tremulous heart. In fact, your heart is only shaking because you are divided.  You don’t have to be afraid to give your all to Jesus.  You of all people know He gave His all for you this week.

When Judson Van DeVenter wrote his most famous hymn, “I Surrender All,” I wonder if he knew the power those words would have in Christian worship. Some worship leaders refused to sing it as a worship song because they didn’t feel like their churches really meant it! Tonight, the words are provided below. Pray them and mean them and find the spiritual health you have been missing.

All to Jesus I surrender,

All to Him I freely give;

I will ever love and trust Him,

In His presence daily live.

I surrender all,

I surrender all.

All to Thee, my blessed Savior,

I surrender all.

All to Jesus I surrender,

Humbly at His feet I bow,

Worldly pleasures all forsaken;

Take me, Jesus, take me now.

All to Jesus I surrender,

Make me, Savior, wholly Thine;

Let me feel Thy Holy Spirit,

Truly know that Thou art mine.

All to Jesus I surrender,

Lord, I give myself to Thee;

Fill me with Thy love and power,

Let Thy blessing fall on me.

All to Jesus I surrender,

Now I feel the sacred flame.

Oh, the joy of full salvation!

Glory, glory to His name!
