What does it actually look like to show up to church in a way that honors God and strengthens the people around you? First Corinthians 14 gives some of the most practical and challenging answers in all of Scripture, and they cut right against the consumer mindset that has crept into so much of modern church culture.
Corporate worship is not a spectator sport. Every follower of Jesus is called to participate actively, whether through singing with genuine joy, praying along when others lead, or engaging seriously with the truth of God's Word. The goal is not to get something out of Sunday morning. The goal is to honor God and build up the body of Christ.
But participation without order leads to chaos, not growth. Paul places clear boundaries on how gifts are exercised in the gathered church, not to silence people, but to ensure that everything done together serves the purpose of exalting Jesus and strengthening others. That principle reshapes how we think about everything from singing to spiritual gifts to how we evaluate what is spoken in a church setting.
First Corinthians 14 also addresses one of the most misunderstood passages in the New Testament, the instruction about women keeping silent in the churches. When read in the full context of the letter, including chapter 11 where Paul gives instructions for women praying and prophesying in the gathered assembly, a much clearer picture emerges. The restriction is not a blanket prohibition. It is connected to a specific kind of speech and to the ordered structure God has established for both the church and the home.
That structure places a real responsibility on husbands and fathers. If a wife is expected to be able to go home and ask her husband about what was taught, then husbands need to be spiritually engaged and growing. The church is not meant to carry the full weight of a family's spiritual formation. That responsibility belongs in the home.
